VALUE AND EXISTENCE OF BAI-SI IN THE MEKONG RIVER BASIN OF NORTHEASTERN THAILAND

Abstract

The research "Value and Existence of Bai-Si in the Mekong River Basin of Northeastern Thailand" aims to 1) study the beliefs and meanings reflected through the use of Bai-Si by people in the Mekong River Basin of Northeastern Thailand, and 2) analyze the roles of Bai-Si affecting social and cultural changes in the communities. Qualitative research methods were used, including document study, in-depth interviews, and participatory observation in 3 main communities in Udon Thani, Mukdahan, and Nakhon Phanom provinces. The results found that Bai-Si has evolved to combine Brahmin, Buddhist, and local beliefs, reflecting the spiritual worldview of the communities. Bai-Si has symbolic meanings representing shared beliefs, values, and identities. Besides being a ritual tool to worship sacred things, Bai-Si also plays important roles in creating unity, changing occupational structures, and preserving local identities. Although the forms have adapted over time, the main roles and values of Bai-Si in society remain the same. In the current context, Bai-Si is given new meanings and utilized in new dimensions along with maintaining cultural essence. Bai-Si is also a tool used by communities to negotiate with external powers such as the state, capital, and mainstream culture through creating images and cultural spaces. The findings demonstrate the dynamics and resilience of Bai-Si culture, which can adapt to social changes while still maintaining core values, faiths, and local identities amidst the changes. If communities continue to recognize the importance and collectively preserve this art and culture, Bai-Si will remain a valuable wisdom heritage of the Mekong River Basin in Northeastern Thailand, with its future sustainability depending on balancing between preserving original values and extending new values.

งานวิจัยเรื่อง "คุณค่าและการดำรงอยู่ของบายศรีในสังคมอีสานลุ่มน้ำโขง" มีวัตถุประสงค์เพื่อ 1) ศึกษาความเชื่อและความหมายที่สะท้อนผ่านการใช้บายศรีของชาวอีสานลุ่มน้ำโขง และ 2) วิเคราะห์บทบาทของบายศรีที่ส่งผลกระทบต่อการเปลี่ยนแปลงทางสังคมและวัฒนธรรมชุมชน โดยใช้ระเบียบวิธีวิจัยเชิงคุณภาพด้วยการศึกษาเอกสาร การสัมภาษณ์เชิงลึก และการสังเกตแบบมีส่วนร่วมในพื้นที่ชุมชน 3 แห่งในภาคอีสาน 3 ชุมชนในจังหวัดอุดรธานี มุกดาหาร และนครพนม ผลการวิจัยพบว่า บายศรีมีพัฒนาการความเชื่อผสมผสานระหว่างคติพราหมณ์ พุทธศาสนา และความเชื่อท้องถิ่น สะท้อนโลกทัศน์ทางจิตวิญญาณของชุมชน บายศรีมีความหมายเชิงสัญลักษณ์ที่แสดงคติความเชื่อ ค่านิยม และอัตลักษณ์ร่วมของผู้คน นอกจากเป็นเครื่องมือประกอบพิธีกรรมบูชาสิ่งศักดิ์สิทธิ์แล้ว บายศรียังมีบทบาทสำคัญในการสร้างความสามัคคี เปลี่ยนโครงสร้างอาชีพ และรักษาอัตลักษณ์ท้องถิ่น แม้รูปแบบจะมีการปรับเปลี่ยนตามยุคสมัย แต่บทบาทและคุณค่าหลักของบายศรีในสังคมยังคงเหมือนเดิม ในบริบทปัจจุบัน บายศรีถูกให้ความหมายและนำไปใช้ประโยชน์ในมิติใหม่ ๆ ควบคู่ไปกับการธำรงแก่นแท้ทางวัฒนธรรมเอาไว้ บายศรียังเป็นเครื่องมือที่ชุมชนใช้เจรจาต่อรองกับอำนาจภายนอกอย่างรัฐ ทุน และวัฒนธรรมกระแสหลัก ผ่านการสร้างภาพลักษณ์และพื้นที่ทางวัฒนธรรม ข้อค้นพบแสดงให้เห็นถึงพลวัตและความยืดหยุ่นของวัฒนธรรมบายศรี ที่สามารถปรับตัวให้สอดคล้องกับการเปลี่ยนแปลงทางสังคม แต่ขณะเดียวกันก็ยังคงดำรงคุณค่าหลัก ความศรัทธา และอัตลักษณ์ท้องถิ่นเอาไว้ได้ท่ามกลางความเปลี่ยนแปลง หากชุมชนยังคงตระหนักถึงความสำคัญและร่วมกันอนุรักษ์สืบทอดศิลปวัฒนธรรมนี้เอาไว้ บายศรีจะยังคงเป็นมรดกภูมิปัญญาล้ำค่าของอีสานลุ่มน้ำโขงสืบไป โดยที่ความยั่งยืนของบายศรีในอนาคตขึ้นอยู่กับการสร้างสมดุลระหว่างการรักษาคุณค่าเดิมกับการต่อยอดสร้างมูลค่าใหม่
