STUDY OF THE WORNFAEH (ewcjzW) RITUAL MUSIC: FUNERAL MUSIC FOR MON MONKS IN THAILAND AND MYANMAR

Abstract

The research on the use of music in the Wornfaeh (ewcjzW) funeral ritual in Thailand and Myanmar had two objectives, as follows: (1) to study the ritual music of Wornfaeh (ewcjzW) and (2) to study the social factors contributing to the maintenance of the Wornfaeh (ewcjzW)ritual. The qualitative research approaches employed in this study included documentary research, field data collection, interpretive data analysis, inductive reasoning, a conclusion, and the results were presented in the form of a treatise. The results revealed the following: (1) Wornfaeh (ewcjzW) rituals in Thailand and Myanmar feature music performance, singing, and a dance procession with a portable castle. The music ensemble consisted of both melodic and rhythmic instruments. The band accompanied the singing parts that contrasted with transitional tunes. The verses described the merits performed by particular monks who passed away. The identical music characteristics found in both countries were melodies played with the verse and bridge parts. However, the Mon lyrics sung by the Mon in Myanmar are more refined and elaborate. The significant differences included language use when singing and the length of the melody; (2) the social factors contributing to the maintenance of the Wornfaeh (ewcjzW) ritual consisted of faith in Buddhism, respect for ancestral ghosts, and pride in Mon nationality. These three factors has helped maintain Wornfaeh (ewcjzW)up to the present time. Thus, the Mon people are aware of the importance of identity maintenance, but current social and economic constraints resulted in a more streamlined version of the ritual, which preserves its value as part of the Mon cultural identity and a spiritual anchor for Mon in Thailand and Myanmar. These factors have made the Wornfaeh (ewcjzW) ritual an essential part of being Mon in both countries.

งานวิจัยเรื่องการศึกษาดนตรีพิธีกรรมวอญย์แฝะ (ewcjzW): ดนตรีในพิธีศพพระสงฆ์มอญในประเทศไทยและประเทศพม่า มีวัตถุประสงค์ดังนี้ (1) เพื่อศึกษาดนตรีพิธีกรรมวอญย์แฝะ (ewcjzW) (2) เพื่อศึกษาองค์ประกอบทางสังคมที่ส่งผลต่อการคงอยู่ของพิธีกรรมวอญย์แฝะ (ewcjzW) วิธีการดำเนินการวิจัยครั้งนี้ใช้ระเบียบวิธีวิจัยเชิงคุณภาพ เก็บรวบรวมข้อมูลโดยการศึกษาเอกสารการเก็บข้อมูลภาคสนาม วิเคราะห์ข้อมูลด้วยวิธีการตีความ สร้างข้อสรุปเป็นอุปนัยและนำเสนอเป็นความเรียง ผลการวิจัย พบว่า (1) พิธีกรรมวอญย์แฝะ (ewcjzW) ในประเทศไทยและประเทศพม่ามีการบรรเลงดนตรี ขับร้องและรำแห่ปราสาทไปพร้อมกัน วงดนตรีประกอบด้วยเครื่องดนตรีประเภทดำเนินทำนองและเครื่องดนตรีประเภทประกอบจังหวะ บรรเลงพร้อมกับการขับร้องและมีทำนองรับ บทร้องภาษามอญพรรณนาถึงความดีของศพพระมอญที่มรณภาพ เอกลักษณ์ทางดนตรีที่เหมือนกันทั้งสองประเทศ คือ การบรรเลงทำนองนำและทำนองเชื่อมซึ่งมีทำนองเหมือนกัน เอกลักษณ์ที่ต่างกัน คือ เนื้อร้องภาษามอญของประเทศพม่าจะมีความสละสลวยละเอียดถี่ถ้วนมากกว่า มีความโดดเด่นทางด้านภาษาที่ใช้ร้อง ทำนองเพลงมีความสั้นยาวต่างกัน (2) องค์ประกอบทางสังคมที่ส่งผลต่อการคงอยู่ของพิธีกรรม วอญย์แฝะ (ewcjzW) ประกอบด้วย ความศรัทธาในพุทธศาสนา การนับถือผีบรรพบุรุษ และ ความภาคภูมิใจในความเป็นชนชาติมอญ ซึ่งทั้ง 3 องค์ประกอบส่งผลให้พิธีกรรมวอญย์แฝะ (ewcjzW) คงอยู่คู่กับชาวมอญจนมาถึงปัจจุบัน ซึ่งชาวมอญมีความตระหนักในการรักษาเอกลักษณ์แต่ด้วยสภาพสังคมและเศรษฐกิจที่เปลี่ยนไปทำให้ลำดับขั้นตอนของพิธีกรรมถูกตัดทอนลงแต่ยังคงรักษาความเป็นเอกลักษณ์และส่งเสริมคุณค่าทางด้านจิตใจของชาวมอญทั้งในประเทศไทยและประเทศพม่าทำให้พิธีกรรมวอญย์แฝะ (ewcjzW) ยังคงอยู่คู่กับชาวมอญทั้งสองแผ่นดินสืบไป
