THE ROLE OF THE SAWANG BENJATHAM FOUNDATION'S (MENGKAK SIENG TUA) TRADITIONAL CHINESE MUSIC ENSEMBLE IN SAMUT SONGKHRAM PROVINCE

Abstract

The research, entitled “The Role of the Sawang Benjatham Foundation’s (Mengkak Sieng Tua) Traditional Chinese Music Ensemble in Samut Songkhram Province”, aims to 1) study the musical history of the Sawang Benjatham Foundation, Samut Songkhram Province, and 2) study the role of the Sawang Benjatham Foundation band, Samut Songkhram Province. The research method focuses on qualitative research. It uses the interview method to collect data from people with knowledge of music and the Chinese-Thai community at the Sawang Benjatham Foundation, Mae Klong Subdistrict, Samut Songkhram Province. The data were analyzed using content analysis.The findings reveal the following data: 1.The musical history of the Sawang Benjatham Foundation Samut Songkhram Province has used Chinese music for various rituals since the foundation's establishment in B.E. 2536 (1993) to the present , inviting Chinese teachers to teach music to people in the foundation for rituals. Later, contemporary Chinese music began to be brought in. Western musical instruments were also incorporated into Chinese bands to enhance their appeal, and the foundation’s band was invited to perform at various events across the country including foreign competitions as well , including international competitions. 2.The role of the Sawang Benjatham Foundation Band, Samut Songkhram Province, is very important to the Chinese-Thai community because many rituals—such as Teochew prayers, funerals, and burials for the destitute and homeless— all use music as part of the ritual. The foundation therefore sees the importance of Chinese music as significant. It also provides students with opportunities to express themselves and help preserve the arts and culture of the Chinese-Thai community for future generations.

การศึกษาวิจัยเรื่องบทบาทวงดนตรีจีนมูลนิธิสว่างเบญจธรรม (เม่งกักเซี่ยงตั๊ว) จังหวัดสมุทรสงคราม มีวัตถุประสงค์ 1) เพื่อศึกษาพัฒนาการทางประวัติศาสตร์ดนตรีของมูลนิธิสว่างเบญจธรรม จังหวัดสมุทรสงคราม และ 2) เพื่อศึกษาบทบาทของวงดนตรีจีนมูลนิธิสว่างเบญจธรรม จังหวัดสมุทรสงคราม วิธีการดำเนินการวิจัยเน้นการศึกษาเชิงคุณภาพ ใช้วิธีการสัมภาษณ์จากผู้ที่มีความรู้ความเชี่ยวชาญเรื่องดนตรีและกลุ่มชาวไทยเชื้อสายจีนที่อยู่ในมูลนิธิสว่างเบญจธรรม ตำบลแม่กลอง จังหวัดสมุทรสงคราม วิเคราะห์ข้อมูลโดยการวิเคราะห์เนื้อหา ผลวิจัยพบว่า1) พัฒนาการทางประวัติศาสตร์ดนตรีของมูลนิธิสว่างเบญจธรรม จังหวัดสมุทรสงครามนั้น มีการใช้ดนตรีจีนประกอบพิธีกรรมต่างๆตั้งแต่เริ่มก่อตั้งมูลนิธิฯใน พ.ศ.2536 จนถึงปัจจุบัน โดยเชิญอาจารย์ชาวจีนมาสอนดนตรีให้แก่คนในมูลนิธิฯ เพื่อประกอบพิธีกรรม ในช่วงหลังเริ่มนำดนตรีจีนร่วมสมัยเข้ามา มีการใช้เครื่องดนตรีสากลเข้ามาประสมวงดนตรีจีน เพื่อให้เกิดความน่าสนใจมากยิ่งขึ้น และได้นำวงดนตรีมูลนิธิออกแสดงตามงานต่างๆทั่วประเทศ รวมถึงการประกวดแข่งขันในต่างประเทศอีกด้วย 2) บทบาทและสถานภาพของวงดนตรีมูลนิธิสว่างเบญจธรรม จังหวัดสมุทรสงคราม พบว่ามีความสำคัญต่อชุมชนชาวไทยเชื้อสายจีนเป็นอย่างมาก เนื่องจากพิธีกรรมต่างๆ ทั้งการสวดมนต์แบบแต้จิ๋ว งานศพ งานเก็บศพไร้ญาติ ล้วนแต่ใช้ดนตรีเข้ามาเป็นส่วนหนึ่งของพิธีกรรม มูลนิธิฯจึงเห็นถึงความสำคัญของดนตรีจีนเป็นอย่างมาก ทั้งนี้ยังเปิดโอกาสให้นักเรียนมีความกล้าแสดงออกและร่วมกันอนุรักษ์ศิลปวัฒนธรรมของชาวไทยเชื้อสายจีนให้คงอยู่สืบไป
