THE ROLE OF U.S. ONLINE MEDIA IN THE ISRAEL-PALESTINE CONFLICT:A CASE STUDY OF ONLINE NEWS COVERAGE BY FOX NEWS DURING A.D. 2023 - 2024

Abstract

This study aimed to examine U.S. foreign policy and the role of the online media outlet Fox News in the context of the Israel–Palestine conflict from October 2023 to April 2024. It also analyzes the direction and frequency of Fox News's news coverage within this geopolitical context using qualitative content analysis of headlines and news articles. The findings reveal that Fox News consistently reported in a manner that supports Israel and generally aligned with the foreign policy stance of the Biden administration during the early stages of the crisis. However, as the U.S. government gradually shifted its position toward greater emphasis on humanitarian concerns and expressed unease with Israel's military operations, Fox News correspondingly adopted a more critical tone toward U.S. foreign policy. This pattern underscores the role of media in constructing political discourse and setting the international agenda, as framed by the concepts of political media theory, the propaganda model, and policy-maker frameworks. These perspectives help explain how Fox News actively selects sides and reinforces pro-Israel ideological dominance in American society.

การศึกษาครั้งนี้มีวัตถุประสงค์เพื่อศึกษานโยบายต่างประเทศของสหรัฐอเมริกาและบทบาทของสื่อออนไลน์ Fox News เกี่ยวกับความขัดแย้งระหว่างอิสราเอล–ปาเลสไตน์ ระหว่างเดือนตุลาคม ค.ศ. 2023 ถึงเมษายน ค.ศ. 2024 รวมทั้งวิเคราะห์ทิศทางการนำเสนอข่าวของสื่อออนไลน์ Fox News ในบริบทความขัดแย้งดังกล่าว โดยใช้ระเบียบวิธีวิจัยเชิงคุณภาพผ่านการวิเคราะห์เนื้อหาของพาดหัวข่าวและบทความข่าว ตลอดจนความถี่ในการนำเสนอข่าว ซึ่งผลวิจัยพบว่า Fox News มีแนวโน้มรายงานข่าวสนับสนุนอิสราเอลและเป็นไปในทิศทางเดียวกับนโยบายต่างประเทศของสหรัฐอเมริกาภายใต้การนำของประธานาธิบดี โจ ไบเดน ในช่วงเริ่มต้นของวิกฤตการณ์ อย่างไรก็ตาม เมื่อนโยบายของรัฐบาลสหรัฐอเมริกาเริ่มเปลี่ยนแปลงไปสู่การให้ความสำคัญด้านมนุษยธรรมและแสดงความห่วงกังวลกับพฤติกรรมของการปฏิบัติการของอิสราเอล Fox News จึงปรับเปลี่ยนจุดยืนมาเป็นการวิพากษ์วิจารณ์นโยบายต่างประเทศของสหรัฐอเมริกามากขึ้น ซึ่งสะท้อนถึงบทบาทของสื่อในการสร้างกรอบวาทกรรมทางการเมือง และการเป็นผู้กำหนดวาระสาธารณะในประเด็นระหว่างประเทศภายใต้บริบทของแนวคิดบทบาทของสื่อทางการเมือง แนวคิดโมเดลโฆษณาชวนเชื่อ และแนวคิดเกี่ยวกับผู้กำหนดนโยบาย ซึ่งช่วยอธิบายการเลือกข้างและการฝังลึกของอุดมการณ์ที่สนับสนุนอิสราเอลในสังคมอเมริกัน
