Abstract
The objective of this research is to examine the musical characteristics and the status of Xianfeng Nan Ju opera in Xianfeng County, Enshi Prefecture, Hubei Province. This study also examines the relationship between music and performance through accompaniment in the Xianfeng Nan ju and Laifeng Nan ju opera teams using qualitative research. It was discovered that the musical characteristics of both teams include four vocal styles: Nan Lu vocal style, Bei Lu vocal style, Shang Lu vocal style, and the other vocal style in Xianfeng Nan Ju and Lai Feng Nan Ju, which is a special characteristic of singing. The musical instruments used in the performance are traditional Chinese instruments, and the music selected matches the emotions of the characters, judging mainly from the script and dialogue. It creates an atmosphere that blends with the rhythm of the song.This includes the status of Nan Ju music in Enshi, Hubei province, which has received support from the public and private sectors, as well as those who are interested in preserving arts and culture. There are opportunities to perform on various stages both live and online throughout the year, and it is popular with people of all generations. Nan Ju music is transmitted mainly through oral tradition. There are courses in educational institutions that promote learning performing arts, as well as practical training activities to promote and conserve Nan Ju music in Enshi, Hubei province as intangible cultural heritage.
