STUDY OF ACTION VERBS AMONG THE PWO KAREN IN WESTERN THAILAND FOLLOWING ETHNOSEMANTICS

Abstract

The aim of this dissertation is to study the action verbs used among the Pwo Karen in the western region and to analyze the concepts reflected by the action verbs of Western Pwo Karen following ethnosemantics. By collecting data on Pwo Karen language verbs from Pwo Karen speakers in three western regions, consisting of Lai Wo Subdistrict, Sangkhlaburi District, Kanchanaburi Province, Huai Khlum Subdistrict, Suan Phueng District, Ratchaburi Province and Song Phi Nong Subdistrict, Kaeng Krachan District Phetchaburi Province. The findings of the study revealed that the Pwo Karen contained seven categories of meaningful verbs, including the following: "to cut" (eight words); "to keep" (seven words); "to wash" (five words); "to burn" (four words); "to hit" (three words); "to boil" (three words); and "to extinguish" (three words); for a total of 33. The verbs showed both the Pwo Karen expressions had seven groups of meanings differed by eight dimensions of semantic difference: tools used, weight, the results of the actions, objectives, and positions of objects. The object being treated, the nature of light and the method of extinguishing it. The conceptual aspects reflected in the Pwo Karen action verbs. It was found that the Pwo Karen verbs reflect seven concepts: (1) reasonableness and consideration for others; (2) simple living; (3) moderation; (4) importance of hierarchy; (5) our being and being them; (6) having enough to live on; and (7) bonding with nature. The findings of the action verb study in the Pwo Karen demonstrated a conceptual viewpoint, which is a methodical manner of thinking and discovered more about the customs of the Pwo Karen ethnic group in the western region.

ปริญญานิพนธ์ฉบับนี้มีจุดมุ่งหมายเพื่อศึกษาคำกริยาแสดงอาการภาษากะเหรี่ยงโปภูมิภาคตะวันตก และ วิเคราะห์มโนทัศน์ที่สะท้อนจากคำกริยาแสดงอาการภาษากะเหรี่ยงโปภูมิภาคตะวันตกตามแนวอรรถศาสตร์ชาติพันธุ์ โดยเก็บข้อมูลคำกริยาแสดงอาการภาษากะเหรี่ยงโปจากผู้พูดภาษากะเหรี่ยงโปภูมิภาคตะวันตก 3 พื้นที่ ประกอบด้วย ตำบลไล่โว่ อำเภอสังขละบุรี จังหวัดกาญจนบุรี ตำบลห้วยคลุม อำเภอสวนผึ้ง จังหวัดราชบุรี และ ตำบลสองพี่น้อง อำเภอแก่งกระจาน จังหวัดเพชรบุรี ผลการศึกษา พบคำกริยาแสดงอาการภาษากะเหรี่ยงโป 7 กลุ่มความหมาย ได้แก่ “ทำให้ขาด” 8 คำ “เอาไปหรือเอามาจากที่” 7 คำ “ทำให้สะอาดโดยใช้น้ำ” 5 คำ “ทำให้สุกหรือไหม้ด้วยไฟ” 4 คำ “เอามือหรือไม้ฟาดหรือเข่นลงไป” 3 คำ “ทำให้ของเหลวหรือสิ่งที่อยู่ในของเหลวเดือดหรือสุก” 3 คำ และ “ทำให้สิ้นแสง” 3 คำ รวมทั้งสิ้น 33 คำ คำกริยาแสดงอาการภาษากะเหรี่ยงโปทั้ง 7 กลุ่มความหมายแตกต่างกันด้วยมิติความแตกต่างทางความหมาย 8 มิติ ได้แก่ เครื่องมือที่ใช้ การลงน้ำหนัก ผลของการกระทำ วัตถุประสงค์ ตำแหน่งของวัตถุ วัตถุที่ถูกกระทำ ลักษณะของแสง และวิธีทำให้สิ้นแสง ด้านมโนทัศน์ที่สะท้อนจากคำกริยาแสดงอาการภาษากะเหรี่ยงโป พบว่าคำกริยาแสดงอาการภาษากะเหรี่ยงโปสะท้อนมโนทัศน์ 7 ประการ ได้แก่ (1) ความมีเหตุผล และคำนึงถึงผู้อื่น (2) ความเป็นอยู่เรียบง่าย (3) การรู้จักประมาณตน (4) ความสำคัญเรื่องลำดับชั้น (5) ความเป็นเราและความเป็นเขา (6) ความพออยู่พอกิน และ (7) ความผูกพันกับธรรมชาติ ผลการศึกษาคำกริยาแสดงอาการภาษากะเหรี่ยงโปแสดงให้เห็นมุมมองมโนทัศน์อันเป็นระบบวิธีคิด และวิถีปฏิบัติของกลุ่มชาติพันธุ์กะเหรี่ยงโปภูมิภาคตะวันตกมากขึ้น
